My start in affordable housing began in 1996, as an Occupancy Specialist. Over the last 23 years my focus has shifted from providing affordable housing to specifically affordable housing for the disabled community. While our housing portfolio is comprised of group homes and complexes that accommodate limited mobility and wheelchair accessibility, the greatest number of properties are dedicated to providing permanent supportive housing for the chronically mentally ill. What makes our company different from most is the sole focus on folks who suffer disabilities. My staff is trained at every opportunity in not just the accounting or maintenance but the human aspect providing for fragile communities. All of my managers are required to be Certified Occupancy Specialists. Besides those certifications, two hold Manager of Maintenance Certificates, two hold MOR certifications and 3 hold Certified Financial Specialists. Our upcoming training included Trauma Informed Care, the massive opioid crises, and of course re-occurring Fair Housing updates. My goal for our company is to make a permanent impact on state of New Mexico, through our actions, our words and our business practices, to make a safe, beautiful, sustainable place to call home for as many of our fellow New Mexicans as possible.
Elena Tapia- Accounting Specialist
I started working for Cion Housing Services in 2011, as a temporary administrative assistant who only planned on working for a few months in between semesters of college. After getting to know Kara, her team, and more about the important work her company does, those few months turned into 8 years, and counting. I’ve always wanted to make a difference in people’s lives and originally went to college for social work. But the longer I worked for Cion Housing Services, the more involved I became with the financial side of property management, and soon discovered a way to make a difference that I had never thought of; accounting! In addition to a bachelor’s degree in sociology and Spanish, I now have a master’s degree of accounting and am responsible for the financial management of every property. Even though I may never meet most of our residents, I take their home, health, and happiness into consideration with everything I do. I may work with numbers, but people will always be my top priority.
Eli Borges- Property Manager
My goal here is to be the go-to person for the residents I serve. I’m continuously putting every possible effort into learning every aspect of this field, not only for my personal growth but also for those who surround me. Personal growth as an employee benefits not only the company I represent and myself, but also those that I serve in our community. My passions are to excel in every aspect of life, from my personal to that of business, and being able to provide the best housing possible as well as better living conditions for those in need is a personal project for me. I take my job very serious. Let’s do everything possible to reduce our homeless population, together we can accomplish anything.
Sonia Flores- COS Manager
I have about 10 years worth of experience working with individuals suffering disabilities. I have been with Cion Housing Services for over 3 years now. I’ve managed properties throughout the southern New Mexico edge. Such as, Casa de Corazones in Las Cruces, Gateway Estates in Deming, NM and San Vicente de La Cienega in Silver City, NM. As your Manager, representative, and advocate I am committed to assisting you in any way that I can and look forward to what my future will bring at my new assignment at Agua Azul Apartments in Albuquerque, NM.
Carlos Semanat- COS/CMM/CFS
I’m highly motivated, and eager to ensure all goals met. I began working in the field of management in 2006 with commercial offices. In 2010 I moved on to PM, corrective, and risk-based maintenance, ensuring all work to meet building standards. After working in this field for a few years I realized and felt the need to do more, naturally I chose to assist a population that rarely sees the necessary support. I began working for individuals suffering from mental health illnesses, intellectual disabilities, as well as those suffering from Physical Disabilities. Slowly this guided me to world of affordable housing supporting those who suffer from these life altering disabilities. We strive to lend a hand and support the Veteran community by offering the same assistance. I started in Albuquerque and Santa Fe with Cion Housing, now I serve the southern region of New Mexico, daily I strive to work with local and state programs to support these communities and offer my expertise in the field to serve as an advocate on a federal level. We don’t just manage nor do we just file paperwork, we ensure our communities shine by giving our all. Homelessness has become a plague which as an organization we plan to diminish as best we can.
Ericka Salas- COS/MOR/CFS/CPO
Eager to learn and strive to be the best I can be in whichever position I’m assigned. I have been in the apartment industry since 2015. I signed on with Cion Housing Services in April of 2016. Throughout my career with here, I have had the opportunities to expand my knowledge in different sections of the affordable housing world and have been able to grow in so many different ways I never thought was possible. I currently manage a PRAC 811 property, small complex of 14 units, the state would benefit immensely in having more of these properties as here in Roswell, NM there are very few affordable housing properties, especially those strictly designated for persons suffering disabilities. I hope one day through federal and local funding we can expand the quantity of complexes available to help the disabled and give more people a place to call Home. My goal for the company is to automate files so they are more complete, accurate, and easier to access throughout the properties we have statewide.
Ezequiel Torres- CMM/BBC Coordinator
I serve as the maintenance supervisor for the greater Albuquerque Area and Santa Fe. At times I coordinate REAC inspections at our southern properties (Deming, Roswell, Silver City, Las Cruces as well as in Artesia for some time) as well as Albuquerque and Santa Fe. I manage and coordinate along with the owner of the properties a program with the federal government known as Better Buildings Challenge. I ensure that all Maintenance, weather preventive or proactive be completed to very high standards. I began with this company in 2015 and have since then progressively grown to value what we accomplish every day I show up for work, not just for our community, but for the individuals we serve. I have taken valuable courses that have guided my drive to be more effective, so as not to throw punches to the wind. My goal in this field is to maximize the potential for individuals to enjoy a safe and healthy living situation, with Cion Housing Services and our partners this will be possible.
